Most training advice assumes daylight and reasonable temperatures, which describes a shrinking fraction of the year for a lot of trail runners. Winter changes more than how cold you feel - it changes footing, visibility, how your body handles fluid, and how long you need to warm up before a hard effort is safe to attempt.
Dress slightly cool, not comfortable
The single most common winter layering mistake is dressing for how the trailhead feels rather than how the run will feel once you're moving. If you're comfortable standing still at the start, you will overheat within twenty minutes and spend the rest of the run in sweat-soaked layers - which is a genuine cold-weather risk, not just an inconvenience, because wet fabric next to skin loses insulating value fast.
The layering system that works:
- Base layer: moisture-wicking synthetic or merino, never cotton. Cotton holds moisture against skin and stops insulating once wet, which is exactly the wrong property in the cold.
- Mid layer: the insulation - fleece or a light insulated layer, sized to be removable if you warm up.
- Shell: wind and water resistance, ideally with some ventilation (pit zips, a full-length front zip) so you can dump heat on a climb without stopping to strip a layer.

Shorter days mean more dark running, even off-season
Winter running pushes a lot of sessions into darkness that would be daylight the rest of the year, whether or not you're specifically training for a night section of a race. Cold muscles and tendons are measurably stiffer, and the tissue that fails first when a warm-up gets skipped in winter is usually the same tissue that would have been fine with an extra five to ten minutes of easy movement first. Extend your warm-up meaningfully in cold conditions before any session involving real intensity or fast descending - this is one of the more avoidable sources of winter running injuries, and it costs nothing but a bit of patience at the start.
For genuinely extreme cold and hard interval sessions, consider a treadmill or indoor option instead. There's no meaningful training loss in swapping one session for indoor equivalent when the alternative is a hard effort on stiff, under-warmed tissue in freezing air.
Hydration doesn't take the winter off
Thirst is blunted in cold weather - a well-documented effect - but actual fluid loss doesn't drop nearly as much as thirst does. You're still sweating under your layers, and cold, dry air increases fluid loss through faster breathing in a way that's easy to underestimate because you don't feel the same sweaty and thirsty as you would in summer.
